Operable Louvre Roof
Norman Park, Brisbane
Set along the Brisbane River at Norman Park, this private riverside residence was designed to embrace Brisbane’s subtropical climate and the relaxed outdoor lifestyle. The project integrates an automated operable louvre roof system, creating a flexible outdoor entertaining area that responds to sun, rain, and cooling river breezes while preserving uninterrupted views across the Brisbane River.
Location on the Brisbane River present unique environmental conditions. Intense western sun, seasonal storms, and strong breezes from the river corridor required a high-performance architectural shading solution capable of providing reliable weather protection without enclosing the space or compromising the home’s city views. Working collaboratively with Plazibat Architects and builder CGH Construction, the design objective was to extend the home’s roof top living environment outward. The result is a seamless transition between indoor living spaces and a generous roof top terrace designed for entertaining, relaxation, and everyday living.
An automated operable louvre roof was selected to provide precise environmental control while maintaining a clean architectural aesthetic. The rotating aluminium blades adjust sunlight, airflow, and shelter throughout the day and night.
The operable Louvre roof invite natural light and river breezes into the outdoor space, supporting passive cooling and ventilation. When closed, the interlocking louvres form a weatherproof roof that channels rainwater into integrated drainage concealed within the structural frame.
The result is a refined architectural addition that strengthens the home’s relationship with the Brisbane River, delivering a flexible outdoor space that adapts instantly to Brisbane’s variable weather conditions. Whether fully open to the sky, partially angled to filter sunlight, or closed during rainfall, the operable roof ensures the space remains comfortable and usable throughout the year.
