Dove Industry supplied and installed an all-weather retractable roof system designed to provide adaptable weather protection throughout the year. When extended, the roof creates a protected outdoor environment that is particularly valuable during the afternoon, when the western sun moves lower across the river and creates increased heat and glare within the outdoor area.
Positioned on the western side of a commercial building on George Street, Brisbane, this outdoor area enjoys impressive views in both directions along the Brisbane River. However, its exposed orientation presented several environmental challenges, including intense afternoon sun, heat, glare, and changing weather conditions. The project required a flexible roofing solution that would improve comfort and weather protection while preserving the open character of the space and its connection to the surrounding city and river landscape.
The system has been designed to complement the building’s contemporary commercial architecture without competing with its prominent riverside location. The streamlined structure provides effective overhead protection while maintaining clear sightless up and down the Brisbane River. By avoiding the visual weight of a permanent roof, the retractable system preserves the openness of the terrace and allows users to experience changing light, weather and river activity throughout the day.
